Project controls terms explained

Critical path

The longest chain of dependent activities; any delay to it delays completion.

✓

Total float

How long an activity can slip without delaying project completion.

✓

Baseline schedule

The approved plan that progress is measured against.

✓

Data date

The date up to which progress has been recorded in a schedule update.

✓

Earned value (EV)

The budgeted value of work actually completed.

✓

SPI & CPI

Schedule and cost performance indices; below 1.0 means behind schedule or over budget.

✓

Time impact analysis (TIA)

Modelling a delay event in the current schedule to measure its effect.

✓

Fragnet

A small network of activities inserted into a schedule to represent a change or delay.

Monte Carlo analysis

Simulation of many possible outcomes to estimate the probability of meeting dates and budgets.

P50 / P80

The date or cost with a 50% or 80% chance of being achieved.

Look-ahead schedule
